Plenty of people dream about being their own boss and starting their own business, but entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. Do you think you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? If you’re thinking about taking the plunge, here are four questions Grant Cardone encourages you to ask yourself first.

Can you accept criticism?

If you want to start your own business, it’s likely that people will have a lot to say about it – and it won’t always be positive. “No matter what choices you make in life, someone is going to criticize you somewhere along the way,” says Grant. This is why you need to consider how you handle criticism. Do you let everyone’s opinions and comments get you down? Or do you have thick enough skin to brush off criticism and move on? If you can do the latter, this is a sign you could make it as an entrepreneur. Successful entrepreneurs know that receiving criticism is just part of the journey.

Can you manage your time?

Everyone has the same amount of time in a single day, but not everyone uses their time the same way. If you want to pursue the busy path of entrepreneurship, you need to ask yourself if you’re going to be able manage your time. Is budgeting your time already a strength of yours?  Then you’re ahead of the game! And if it’s not? You can always learn and improve. “I challenge you to keep track of how you’re spending your available time, perhaps in a journal,” suggests Grant.

Are you flexible?

Pursuing entrepreneurship means that almost every aspect of your life will change. You’ll go from reporting to a boss to being in charge of yourself, having regular work hours to making your own schedule, and spending your free time with friends or family to spending every second on your business. Adjusting to your new life won’t necessarily be easy, so you need to consider how you adapt to change. Are you flexible? Do you welcome changes in your life and routine? If so, this is a sign you could make a good entrepreneur. “Successful people love change,” insists Grant.

Are you passionate?

You can be hardworking, determined, and hungry for success, but if you aren’t passionate, you’re going to eventually burn out. This is why you need to ask yourself if you’re truly passionate about pursuing entrepreneurship. If your heart isn’t 100% in it, being successful as an entrepreneur will be extremely difficult. Just remember what Grant says: “It is not necessarily the smartest and brightest who win in the game of life but rather those who can commit the most passionately to their cause.”
